San
Diego City and County -
Downtown
San Diego is located around a well protected bay on the Pacific Coast of
the United States, only a few miles north of the border with Mexico. San
Diego County encompasses fine harbors and bays, beautiful beaches, parks
and zoos, rugged oak and pine covered mountains, and strikingly desolate
deserts. This wide variety of environments and a mild Mediterranean
coastal climate have made San Diego a favorite for movie makers, tourists,
and residents alike.
San
Diego, with a population of over 1.2 million, is the second largest city
in California, and sixth largest in the United States. It is home to
several major colleges, universities, and research institutes, including
the Catholic University of San Diego (USD), the University of California
at San Diego (UCSD), San Diego State University (SDSU), United States
International University (USIU), and National University (NU). An
additional county-wide system of 9 state community colleges serve two-year
degree and general adult education needs. Perhaps not surprisingly,
approximately 175,000 county residents are enrolled in higher education,
and 29.8 percent of San Diego adults have college degrees, the highest
percentage among the 20 most populous cities in America.
La Jolla -
All
Hallows Parish is located within the unique San Diego seaside community of
La Jolla. This area is noted for the presence of UCSD, Scripps Research
Institute, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Scripps Institution
of Oceanography, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, Scripps Clinic, and a
multitude of other high-technology and bio-technology firms. To the east,
it abuts the "Golden Triangle", San Diego's corporate business
park.
La
Jolla also has a theatrical playhouse, art galleries, museum, aquarium,
scenic coastal hilltop and seaside walks, Torrey Pines State Park, long
stretches of beach, a tennis club, and a golf course. |
