Chicago native Cardinal Prevost elected pope, takes name Leo XIV

Cardinal Robert F. Prevost, a Chicago native, was elected the 267th pope on May 8, 2025, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. As the first North American pope, his American ties are significant, having been born in Chicago, educated at Villanova University, and holding a theology degree from the Catholic Theological Union. His extensive service in the U.S., including as prior general of the Augustinians’ Chicago-based province, underscores his deep connection to his homeland.

Before his election, Prevost’s global visibility stemmed from his role as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, where he helped Pope Francis select bishops worldwide and met numerous bishops during their Vatican visits. A longtime missionary in Peru, where he also holds citizenship, he served as bishop of Chiclayo until 2023. His cosmopolitan yet pastoral approach, praised by both conservatives and progressives, made him a standout candidate in the conclave.

Pope Leo XIV’s election was marked by jubilant scenes in St. Peter’s Square, with white smoke and ringing bells signaling his selection. His leadership emphasizes unity, service, and combating clericalism, drawing from his missionary experience and Pope Francis’ teachings.
