All Hallows Church

Over the past year with many of us missing the physical connection of church, we've come to realize the heart and mind of church is the same as it was in those early days. Our communion with one another is an extension of our communion with God in word and sacrament. We've experienced that communion in so many ordinary and small ways during the pandemic....

We can build walls around ourselves so as not to be knocked over by the gale winds, but eventually, whatever walls we build — no matter how impregnable we think they are — will collapse. "Let the spirit of God blow through our lives, sweeping away the deadness of our sadness and cynicism. Let the air of God's spirit animate our souls to embrace the promise and hope of Easter," says Father Jerry in today's video above.

Faith is self-validating. In other words, as you live, it becomes a reality in your life. "When I was first ordained, I met a pediatric oncologist, a doctor who works with children with cancer," says Father Jerry in today's homily. "Fred told me that when he began his medical career, he didn't believe in God, but his young patients' unshakeable faith — even in the face of death — eventually brought him to God....

In today's homily, Father Jerry tells the story of a 12- and 15-year pair of sisters who are part of a 13-month study for Moderna's coronavirus vaccine. Why did they agree to do such a thing, and for so long? Was it for selfish reasons, or to do something bigger? Hear the answers in today's brief video above. Let us pray....

LIT is Mary Karr's best-selling memoir of her descent into the hell of alcoholism, and fighting her way to resurrection, as a mom, a writer, and a human being. She writes with unflinching self-scrutiny, irreverent humor, and the insight that comes only from facing one's mistakes with honesty and determination. "It's easy to get caught up in the Easter festivities of this week, but resurrection comes with a cost," says Father Jerry....

"As the risen Jesus appears to the eleven as flesh and bone, Jesus calls us — you and me — to be flesh and bone witnesses of His resurrection," says Father Jerry in today's homily above, "To be the flesh and bone of His compassion and peace for every soul consigned to forgotten graves and cemeteries of failure and rejection."

In today's gospel, Jesus appears to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. "We all have Emmaus-like experiences of fear, confusion, dread and worry," says Father Jerry in today's homily above, "But along the way Christ makes Himself known in our midst: In the loving support of family and friends... of our community and our parish. Christ travels with us on our own road to Emmaus." May our Easter celebration open our hearts and spirits to recognize Christ among us in every moment of our lives.

Mary Magdalene is beside herself with horror. What have they done with Jesus? Where is the body? What final last indignity has been inflicted on her friend? When she sees who she thinks is a gardener, she begs him for the body and she will take it. And when the gardener calls her by name, she realizes it is Jesus....

The chief priests gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, "You are to say 'his disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep.' And if this gets to the ears of the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble." It's not so much the lie, nor is it the willingness to take money to perpetuate the lie....
