Mission Weekend
FOUNDATION WORKS HAVE BEGUN FOR ST. MARY’S CHURCH IN BABIANIHA, GHANA
Urgent Need for New Building
St. Mary’s Church, established in 1930, urgently needs a new building. The current mud clay church, built in 1985, is deteriorating and too small for the growing congregation. Cracks and leaks make it unsafe, prompting the decision to construct a new church complex, which will include a Marian Grotto, a creche for Sunday school kids, and a mechanized borehole for water supply.
Growing Community
Babianiha village, with 4,500 residents, has over 400 active members at St. Mary’s Church. The poor state of the current building has deterred some former members, highlighting the need for a new structure.
Community Efforts and Support
Parishioners, mostly subsistence farmers, have been contributing towards the construction project. The Diocese of San Diego’s Missionary Cooperative Plan (MCP) provided $4,500 in 2023, enabling the start of foundation work in February 2024.
Appeal for Donations
The new church complex will cost $245,000. Generous donors can help:
- $5,000: Name engraved on marble stones of the Altar of the new Church building
- $3,000: Name displayed on the donation tree at the main entrance of the new church building
- $1,000: Name on donation trees at the other church entrances
