Monday of the 11th Week in Ordinary Time

The famous phrase ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’ comes from the law of retaliation found in the book of Exodus. “Christ took the law to an entirely different level, forbidding retaliation entirely,” says Father Jerry in today’s homily, “He gave an extreme insult as an example: a slap on the cheek.”

Or consider when someone asks to borrow one of your most prized possessions, asks you to walk a mile, or volunteer for three hours. Christ encourages us to give more, walk farther, and volunteer longer… to do more than what is asked of us. “For God wants us to be profitable not to ourselves alone, but to all our neighbors as well,” adds Father Jerry.
