All Hallows Church

"To love others as Christ loved us often demands first that we put aside our own misgivings and fears and embarrassments in order to help others overcome their own misgivings and fears and embarrassments," says Father Jerry in today's homily, "That kind of love can be so overwhelmingly demanding and draining that we shy away from it." Hear the full message in Father's new video above.

In today's homily, Father Jerry tells the story of a Spanish-speaking family that flew to Portland — the wrong Portland. But with only a couple hundred dollars in their pockets, they were stuck on the wrong side of the country and found themselves sleeping in the airport. The way this family of three was treated by an airport employee may leave you reaching for your Bible today. What would you have done in the security agent's position? Hear the full story in Father Jerry's new video above.

Today the church celebrates Wednesday of the 2nd Week of Lent and also the Feast of Saint Katherine Drexel. Let us pray. Keep Your family, O Lord, schooled always in good works, and so comfort them with Your protection here, as to lead them graciously to gifts on high. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. God forever and ever. Amen

"The true value of every human life is the light that God kindles within them," says Father Jerry in today's homily above, "Our true worth is found in the love of God that our lives reveal to the world. Our degrees and titles and offices and skills are talents and resources given to us by God as a means to realize God's kingdom of justice, mercy and peace....

"We only forgive if our opponent makes the first move," says Father Jerry as he describes modern society, "Our public discourse desperately needs a measure of compassionate listening. Our national conversation must be rooted in respect and charity. So today may we remember and pray for those who work in government. Those who manage our city and community services. Those many scientists and lawyers and analysts who protect our common interests and shared resources. And those who provide the everyday services we need to keep our homes and cities functioning."

The crosses that we will find along our way in this life will, in the long run, strengthen us so that we can survive life's rainstorms and floods. An uncomfortable and frightening prospect, yes, but as Saint Paul reminds us in today's reading, "If God is for us, who can be against us?" Jesus teaches us not to turn away from the crosses that life places on our shoulders, but rather to bear them with grace and dignity, so that we will find the life of God within us....

God doesn't rejoice in the humiliation and devastation of those who betray what is good and who destroy what is holy. God always seeks to bring them back, and wants us to be the means for their return. This Lent challenges us to rethink our image of God in light of our relationships with one another, and to remember again and again who created whom and why?
