When we are children, so many explanations began with “it’s like.” The wise teacher or instructor starts with the familiar in order to understand something new. Discovery comes when we look beyond what we can see to what we don’t really see. That’s the challenge Jesus poses to His disciples the night before He died. He has been speaking to them in figures of speech about the reconciling love of God. But in the events of the next 48 hours, they will see beyond the parables to realize that love as it is.
