The ruler that Jesus warns us of in today’s gospel is that self-centeredness that makes us put our own interests and wants before that of others. The ruler that Jesus knows too well is the attitude that our perspective, our sins, our morality, our culture and nationality and race, are superior to that of any other. The ruler that is the antithesis of Jesus’ spirit of compassion and justice is the source of division and discord among our families and communities. The ruler of the world is in our midst here and now.
