Monday of the 10th Week in Ordinary Time

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. “So who are the poor in spirit? Is Jesus talking about the depressed?” Father Jerry asks, “Are the sad and the pessimistic happy in Jesus’ eyes. Of course not. The word used in the original Greek text of Matthew’s Gospel denotes beggar sometimes who is destitute.”

Throughout the Gospel, Jesus exalts the poor and vulnerable as precious in God’s eyes. Wealth, Jesus warns, is often an obstacle to authentic discipleship. The kingdom of God belongs to those whose only possession is God.

Blessed are those who consider themselves stewards of what they have; they realize God has entrusted them with wealth and abilities to use for the good of all God’s people. Jesus promises the kingdom of heaven to all who possess such a poverty of spirit, that compels them to generosity and mercy.
